Solo Female RAAM’r and Jenn’s Project

HI to cycling bloggers! Wanted to put out a blog to help get my “cause/project” out!

I am an elite ultra endurance cyclist that has, apparently, lost her mind. Ramping up to do solo RAAM in June 2009(Race Across America-3000 miles) and solo (Race Across the West-1000 miles) this June 2008.

If you are not familiar with ultra cycling and ultra cycling racing, think solo non stop 24 hr mtn bike racing, but on speed! And on the road) RAAM is the big one of all ultra racing-has been running for 25 plus year.

My “project-cause” is to use that visibility to go to both the local and national levels for awareness and understanding of not only ultra cycling, but more importantly for raising awareness for the often hidden diseases of anorexia, etc. I figure that since I was one of the “lucky” gals to have had a hidden 20-year personal daily hell that I needed to do something to help get awareness. Both as an athlete/cyclist, but as a “girl next door who seems to have a charmed life thing going”. Just couldn’t do it without having had any recovery of my own.

As I get this mission “on the road”, I am reaching out to my cycling community, but also to corporations, entities, and individuals that would like to help. My goal is to raise sponsorships as well as donations-covering cost of race, but more importantly giving to local and national foundations. Helping anyone I can will have made all the training and the work to get exposure completely worth it…no question. Always wanted to do something big-but without recovery, it is tough to really hit your best riding-and this certainly applies to anyone-cyclist or not in terms of overcoming some big stuff.

  1. Good luck with Race Across the West this year and RAAM next year. I’ve hardly been on the bike since my 2006 RAAM attempt but I plan to be back to racing this year. I’m thinking Race Across the West next year and RAAM again in 2010. I just need to get better at raising money.
